In this mixed media self-portrait created for my Drawing 2 class at the University of Northern Iowa, I explored identity through texture, symbolism, and contrast. Using charcoal, gesso, Indian ink, and gold pen, I built a layered image shaped by my love for historical architecture and my constant pursuit of freedom. The structured forms of aged buildings rise in the background, grounding the piece in a sense of place and memory. Fragmented gold birds drift around my face. They are delicate, unfinished, and in motion,  pieces of myself still finding their way. The use of gold not only highlights these moments of flight but also suggests the value in becoming, not just being.
